HONORABLE MENTIONS (FIGURES I ALSO PICKED UP IN 2020…NO MATTER WHEN THEY WERE FIRST RELEASESD)
So with the TOP 10 TOYS I BOUGHT IN 2020 out of the way, it’s time to churn out a quick fast post of the B list, aka the toys that were ALL in the running on my master list for the TOP 10, but after eliminating whatever I could, here are the Honorable Mentions of Kick-Ass toys what I done bought in 2020.
10. SKY LYNX / TRANSFORMERS GENERATIONS
Any giant size Transformer released gets my attention in any year, be it the Titan scale or the new “Commander” scale – basically a toy bigger than the new BS leader class. Sky Lynx I love as a toy, and as a character. I looked forward to him all year, and when I got him in hand – he was very nice, but nothing really stands out to make it any better than “pretty good”. I’m glad to have it, not ashamed of how I got it.
9. MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE ORIGINS JET SLED WITH PRINCE ADAM
I was so impressed with the quality of the build, the look and feel of the ORIGINS Jet Sled that when it arrived in hand, I immediately ordered another one. The swappable faction head on the front, the swappable side deco dragon thing and the high quality base stand with tilt function all scream good design, sturdy build quality and great value for money with a toy of this size.
8. MARVEL LEGENDS JUGGERNAUT
Marvel Legends Juggernaut is similar to the Diamond version, but has some nice articulation. Some folks still prefer the old Diamond one, and there is really no reason not to have both in your collection. My version is the Colossus / Juggernaut two pack re-release, it’s one of my all time favorite Marvel Legends figures for sure and I can’t imagine any X-collection without it.
7. FORTNITE WOLF DUDE / DIRE
Fortnite has some really cool comic book and video game inspired designs in their toy line up. This version is one from the McFarlane lot, and it has what you would expect – lots of lovely detail, fairly good paint work and the 7″ scale works well for this figure who can mix in with any number of figure lines as a cool Werewolf, or as a stand alone piece. His most obvious inspiration is Talbain from the Darkstalkers video game, who also wears ripped shorts, bare feet and sports nunchuks. I still have my old Playmates Talbain figure so I may put these two together sometime.
6. MARVEL LEGENDS VENOM (MONSTER VERSION)
Monster Venom! Or just “Venom” as I call him, as the modern comics art for Venom usually has him in an exaggerated large form. The previous release was the Mac Gargan Venom with the giant white spider thing on his chest and a slightly shiny deco. This is modern roid-rage Venom, but in the classic comic book colors from the early days. He’s black, rather than black-blue and is rather lovely.
5. DIAMOND ANTI-VENOM
Anti-Venom is so spiky and sharp that I hurt myself as soon as I opened the package, a sure sign of just how mean and nasty he is. The ML version was lacking in just about every way – while the DIAMOND version is more accurate to the comics and just a beautiful figure and amazing sculpt in person. It feels like the the super detailed toys you used to get in the earlier days of McFarlane toys when they went nuts making all kinds of mutants, monsters and weirdos.
4. MARVEL LEGENDS TOXIN
One good Venom BAF deserves another. A simple repaint of the Gargan/Eddie Monster Venom BAF, with an entirely new head and cool crazy tendrils that plug into his back. The head scuplt is very impressive, it’s better thant the Venom head, it’s better than the Venom Deadpool also and really is in a class of its own. From the neck down it’s the same figure, but it’s a figure absolutely worth owning for Spider-Man and Symbiote fans.
3. POKEMON BATTLE FIGURE BLASTOISE
Blastoise is a large colorful toy and the kind of predictble quality you can expect from TOMY. As usual the Battle Figure collection are hit and miss for what stores stock them, I could happily but this line for many years if they keep up this kind of quality and affordability.
2. STAR WARS BLACK SERIES MANDALORIAN (BESKAR ARMOR)
It’s the same Mando figure I bought a year ago, in a shiny new later season color from melty war crime metal spoils. Shiny Beskar armor has become the definitive look of The Mandalorian and it’s one redeco totally worth owning that I believe outshines it’s predecessor.
1. HUMUNGOUSAUR / BEN 10
In a year (now almost two years in a row) with no new mainline Ninja Turtles Playmates toys, I had to look elsewhere for my 4-5″ mutants, monsters and weirdos. Fortunately some late release BEN 10 toys could be found online that we never got at any of my local stores. The last release is one of the best versions of Humungousaur yet made. Beautiful sculpt, big exaggerated muscles and that craggy face that can only be rivalled by the ever lovin’ blue eyed Thing.
